Best Time to Visit Sam Sand Dunes, Jaisalmer
Short answer: October to March, and if you want the very best of it, aim for November to February. The desert is all about the temperature — get the season right and Sam is magic; get it wrong and it's brutal.

Month by month
October & November — the season opens
The heat finally breaks. Days are warm and comfortable, nights turn pleasantly cool. November is one of the best months of the year for the dunes — great light, easy camping weather.
December & January — peak, and cold at night
Daytime is lovely and clear. But desert nights get genuinely cold — sometimes near freezing — so this is bonfire-and-jacket season. Crystal-clear skies make it the best time for stargazing at camp.
February — the festival month
Arguably the single best time to come. The weather is ideal and the Jaisalmer Desert Festival (Maru Mahotsav) takes over the city and the dunes with camel races, folk music, turban and moustache competitions and fireworks. In 2027 it runs 18–20 February. Camps and hotels sell out months ahead for these dates, so book early.
March — closing window
Early March is still good; by late March the heat starts building fast. Come in the first half if you can.
April to June — skip it
Thar summer is no joke. Daytime temperatures routinely cross 40°C and touch 45°C. A camel safari in that heat isn't fun, and camping is uncomfortable. Not the time.
July to September — monsoon
Rain is light this far west, and the desert gets a brief green fringe. It's humid and less predictable, but quieter and cheaper if you don't mind the gamble.
Whatever the month, plan your safari for late afternoon into sunset. Midday desert light is flat and harsh; golden hour on the dunes is what the photos are made of.
What about time of day?
The dunes have two magic hours. Sunset is the classic — camel safari into the golden light, then dinner and music at camp. What is the best month to visit Sam sand dunes?
November to February for the best mix of comfortable days and clear, cool nights. October and early March are solid shoulder-season options too.
Can you visit in summer?
Not advised. April–June sees 40–45°C days; safaris and camping become uncomfortable and can be risky.
