Two nights and three days is the sweet spot for Jaisalmer — enough to soak in the golden city and still get a full desert night at Sam. Here's the exact plan we run, hour by hour, with what to see, when to go, and what it costs.

Day 1 — Arrive & own the golden city
Most people reach Jaisalmer by the morning train or an overnight bus. Get picked up, drop your bag, and give the city the full day it deserves.
Morning: Jaisalmer Fort (Sonar Quila)
Start at the fort — one of the very few living forts in the world, with families, shops and cafés still inside its walls. Wander the lanes, see the Jain temples, and climb up for views over the sandstone rooftops.
Afternoon: Havelis & Gadisar Lake
Walk to Patwon Ki Haveli and Nathmal Ki Haveli — mansions carved so finely the stone looks like lace. As the heat drops, head to Gadisar Lake, ringed by little temples and ghats, for a slow boat ride.
Evening: Sunset + rooftop dinner
Catch sunset from the fort ramparts or a rooftop café, then have dinner overlooking the lit-up fort. Early night — tomorrow's the big one.
Stay in or just below the fort on night one. It puts you a short walk from everything and you wake up to the fort glowing gold at 6am.
Day 2 — Into the dunes
Morning: Kuldhara ghost village
Drive out to Kuldhara, an entire village abandoned overnight nearly two centuries ago and never resettled. It's eerie, photogenic and a great half-hour stop on the way west.
Afternoon: Reach Sam sand dunes
Continue to Sam, about 40 km from the city, and check into your desert camp. Rest through the harsh afternoon light — the desert is best from late afternoon.
Golden hour: Camel + jeep safari
This is the moment. A camel safari across the dunes as the sun drops, with an optional jeep dune-bashing ride if you want the adrenaline version. The light on the sand at this hour is unreal.
Night: Desert camp
Back at camp for the full experience — Rajasthani folk music and dance around a bonfire, a proper thali dinner, and then the thing you came for: a completely open sky, thick with stars, once the music winds down.
Desert nights get genuinely cold from November to February — pack a jacket even if the day was warm. It catches a lot of first-timers off guard.
Day 3 — Sunrise & head home
Wake early for a dune sunrise — quieter and, honestly, prettier than the sunset. Have breakfast at camp, then an easy drive back to the city for your afternoon train, bus or onward drive. Bags full of sand, camera roll worth keeping.
What to pack
- Layers — light clothes for the day, a warm jacket for desert nights (Oct–Feb)
- Sunscreen, sunglasses and a scarf or cap for the dunes
- Comfortable shoes for fort lanes; sandals for the sand
- A power bank — you'll shoot a lot of photos and video
- Cash for small local shops, tips and snacks

Is 2 nights 3 days enough for Jaisalmer?
Yes — it's the ideal length. One night for the city (fort, havelis, Gadisar Lake) and one night at a Sam desert camp covers every highlight without rushing. Add a night only if you want a slower pace or extra spots like Bada Bagh and Tanot.
How far is Sam from Jaisalmer city?
About 40–42 km west, a 50–60 minute drive. Most camps are clustered around the Sam dunes area.
When is the best time to visit?
